EMPD025: K+Lab: The Kolab Remixes

Kolab are a New Zealand based hip hop outfit who have been tearing up airwaves since 2004. Their style is jazz and funk fusion and inspiration comes via the likes of De La Soul, Common, A Tribe Called Quest and J Dilla. Along with regular appearances on the New Zealand Independent Music Charts, Kolab have also featured on the cover of Remix Magazine as well as on Sony Playstation promotional material. Their debut album “What comes next” was featured on the iTunes “hot” list.

Now Empathy Recordings in association with Kolab are proud to bring you a very special collaboration: K+Lab vs Kolab!

K+Lab is quickly becoming the dominant force in New Zealand glitch hop. His signature bass heavy hip hop fusion blends seamlessly with Kolab’s jazz-hop synthesis. K+Lab’s Vibe up remix of “Killin Time” will not disappoint fans of the original and is sure to keep K+Lab’s glitched out hordes pleased with its chopped up breaks and heavy synthesized bass. Next up K+Lab’s remix of “City streets” steps up the pressure. It’s a luxuriously smooth liquid drum n bass exploration which is sure to find a home on many a large sound system in the very very small hours.

Whether you like your funk straight up or crookedly broken, this release has something for you. It will be available 15 August from Beatport.com, junodownload.com, addictech.com and all your favourite online stores.

26.May.2011 Empathy Recordings 8th Birthday Special

It all started for Empathy back in 2003 with a drunken brag that our mate’s music was as good as anything we were hearing on the radio. Putting our money where our mouths was, a short while later Empathy Recordings was formed and our first release was on the shelves. The first release was humble – a limited edition compilation CD featuring music from up and coming local electronic artists. It’s now eight years later and the Empathy story has continued with many more friends and much broader horizons.

Empathy has developed an extensive digital catalogue with more than forty artists represented as well as six commercially released compilations featuring New Zealand’s top breakbeat talent. For 8 years Empathy has been uncovering secret bedroom talent and in that time we’ve seen dozens of artists develop into genuine stars. To celebrate our 8 years we thought it was about time we gathered together some of our favourite artists to strut their stuff through the mighty Sandwiches sound rig. In true Empathy style, we’re covering all genres.

Borderline’s meteoric rise in the international Drum n Bass scene has seen him releasing on labels such as Cyanide, Red Light, Citrus, Smptm, DSCi4, Shadybrain and of course Empathy. He’ll be representing the darker side of things with what will no doubt be a brooding affair, oozing with deep basslines.

K+Lab is one of Empathy’s rising stars. He has been waving the Glitch Hop flag loud and proud. He has dominated all that is Glitch in New Zealand for the last couple of years. Expect a live Ableton set that’s heavy in basslines, glitched out beats and is dripping with his signature funk. Guesting with K+Lab is the amazingly talented female soul vocalist Sacha Vee. They are a combination that is not to be missed.

Olie Bassweight – head honcho of New Zealand’s own Bassweight Recordings – needs no further introduction. He will be bringing the absolute freshest Dubstep there is to offer. Will it be heavy? Will it be lush? You’ll just have to come to find out!

Empathy’s own co-founder Double_Negative will be balancing the night out with hands in the air bass injected party breakbeats. In true Dneg style he’ll have you nodding your head and clambering for the dance floor.

Holding things down in the Front room we have some of our favourite ‘Friends of Empathy’ DJs keeping things diverse and vibing. With Swamp, Snax, Dr Zhivago & Cest La Vie on the controls, you’ll have plenty of aural treats to sip your drinks and talk shit to your mates about.

We can’t wait to hear what all these artists have in store us and for $10 on the door it’s a bargain. Throw in the 50 back catalogue Empathy CDs we’re giving away to early arrivals, it’s a hands down steal.

Come celebrate in style with us… we hope to see you there!

01.Feb.2011 EMPD020: William Breakspear – Skydive

Raised by wolves in the depths of English woodland, Breakspear soon came to love the natural rhythms of the forest. Thrust into the city as a pup he foraged for beats in the urban sprawl, occasionally finding a kick or bass slide which reminded him of the forest. Now he has mastered his biomechanic arms and digital brain he can finally return to the trees with added vigour and become complete with the beat.

William has a reputation for creating the most primal sounding high tech music you will ever hear. Analogue samples, 8 bit fuzziness and old school booming basslines can all be heard in any one of William’s multi genre workouts.

Backing up William, Empathy has assembled a team of unrivalled breakbeat expertise…

K+Lab is no stranger to Empathy. In 2010 he gave us “The Whole World’s Ill” which featured on glitch and breakbeat charts across the world. His blend of dirty basslines, 80′s hip hop breaks and electro freshness is a perfect complement to the Breakspear sound. Their two collaborations on this release will undoubtedly find a welcome home in any good breakbeat collection.

Throughout the years Timmy has proven you don’t need to think inside one genre to keep people on the dance floor. Playing across the board with breaks, house, techno, garage, drum ‘n’ bass, electro, booty bass, hip hop and downbeat, Timmy has kept the dance floors heaving for 20 years. 20 years of undying service, smashing clubs, festivals and radio transmitters apart with his fearsome mixing skills and secret artillery of hot tunes. With releases on labels like Passenger,
Cut La Roc’s Rocstar Records and DJ Icey’s label Zone, Timmy has made his mark on breakbeat world wide. Moving into 2011, he explores the 4/4 bassline genre with some crisp biscuits due for release soon, including a remix of DJ Love due out on Ali B’s AIR imprint.

Greg Churchill completes the release with his Aural Trash remix – Putting together parties and radio shows since 1984. Known for his strong commitment to the electronic music scene and upcoming talent, Greg Churchill is undoubtedly a legend within the NZ dance world. He has a long list of production credits on labels such as Underwater Records, Gung Ho, Craft, Azul, Data and Cosmonote Blue. His collaboration with William Breakspear features his trademark electro clash sound with a razor like glitchy edge.

The Skydive EP is out on Feb 14 and comes complete with 6 tracks of glitch breakbeat derangement… you’d be a fool to miss out.
